Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea can have a devastating effect on the quality of your sleep and life overall. One of the ways to treat sleep apnoea is wearing an oral appliance whilst sleeping. Working together with other health professionals, we can find solutions to help you sleep better.
What is obstructive sleep apnoea?
Many people suffer from sleep apnoea without knowing it, just experiencing general fatigue. In obstructive sleep apnoea, throat muscles and airways relax, restricting airflow and causing an obstruction. When this occurs for more than 10 seconds, it’s known as an apnoea. The lack of oxygen causes your body to wake up throughout the night without you noticing, resulting in poor sleep. Snoring can occur of itself or be a sign of a much more serious problem, obstructive sleep apnoea.
If not treated, sleep apnoea can be associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Because of the effect it has on the quality of sleep, you’ll feel the effects in your everyday life. If you suspect you might suffer from sleep apnoea, it’s worth it to approach health professionals for a diagnosis and treatment.
Other signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea:
- Daytime sleepiness
- Clenching, and grinding of the teeth
- Dry mouth
- Lack of concentration, irritability
How do you treat obstructive sleep apnoea?
At Dentistry on George, we can help treat sleep apnoea in both adults and children. We work closely with sleep physicians to find the right treatment for you. They may recommend an oral device, called a mandibular advancement splint. These work by moving the lower jaw forward, thus enlarging the airway space and reducing the apnoea episodes.
As we want our work to be backed by the latest research, we use the SomnoMed appliance. Studies have shown significant clinical benefits, and the large majority of patients find it comfortable to wear.
