Prevention is better than cure. Our preventative dental care services include check-ups, oral cancer screening, teeth cleaning, x-rays, fluoride, and sports mouthguards. We don’t just fix problems – we find the cause and aim to prevent it from happening again. All we ask of you is that you attend your regular dental check-ups so the dentist can pick up these problems early.
What is preventative dental care?
The best preventative dental care is to visit your dentist regularly for dental check-ups and teeth cleaning. During these regular appointments, your dentist will monitor your oral health and pick up on any issues. This way, you’ll avoid more invasive and extensive forms of treatment in the future. At check-ups, we can also spot tooth grinding and jaw clenching, which could be causing further health issues such as headaches.
At Dentistry on George, our clients’ long-term health is our focus. As our client, we’ll monitor your oral health on an ongoing basis to identify problems early. We take pride in offering honest advice, only ever recommending treatment that is necessary for your health and well-being. Our team is always happy to offer advice on how to improve your oral health and hygiene.
We believe in quality over quantity, giving you the time and attention you deserve during each appointment.
Examples of preventative care methods
Many preventative dental care methods can be added to your regular check-ups. We’ll always ask for your consent before proceeding with any, but let your dentist know if you’d like a specific treatment added in.
Teeth Cleaning and Fluoride
Professional teeth cleaning and the application of fluoride can be added to your regular check-ups as you wish. Teeth cleaning removes the mineralised plaque that can build up on teeth, and fluoride is applied to reduce cavities and improve the general health of the teeth.
Oral Cancer Screening
In oral cancer screening, the dentist examines the patient’s mouth to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions. The purpose behind oral cancer screening is to identify cancer early, so the chances to cure it are higher. At Dentistry on George, we do oral cancer screening as part of every dental check-up.
When it comes to monitoring your oral health, the X-ray misses nothing. X-rays are used to identify issues such as cavities and gum disease on the non-visible sides of the teeth and gums. The recommended frequency of X-rays differs depending on the level of risk for each patient. For high-risk patients, it can be annually or even more frequently, whereas for mid to low-level risk patients every 2-4 years.
Playing sports comes with a risk of injuries, including losing or damaging teeth. Custom-fitted sports mouthguards can help prevent future injuries. A mouthguard is a thick shield that fits over your teeth to protect them. When you visit our clinic, we create a mould of your teeth that is then sent to a local Australian lab where a custom mouthguard is made.
