If grinding is wearing down or cracking your teeth, a custom night splint is usually the first thing we recommend. It’s simple, well-proven, and doesn’t involve anything invasive — but it’s worth knowing what’s actually involved before you commit to one.

What it is

A custom night splint — sometimes called an occlusal splint or night guard — is a hard, custom-fitted device worn while you sleep. It sits between your upper and lower teeth so the force of grinding is absorbed by the splint instead of your enamel, fillings, and crowns.

Custom-made 3D printed nylon mouth guard for tooth grinding

Custom vs chemist-bought

A splint fitted to your own bite stays comfortable through the night and is built to handle the forces you actually generate. A generic mouth guard is built to an average shape rather than your mouth — it’s often uncomfortable enough that people give up wearing it, and in some cases can encourage more clenching rather than less. If you’re going to wear something every night, it’s worth it being made for you.

Custom-made hard acrylic splints for tooth grinding

What the process actually involves

A digital scan of your teeth

Lab fabrication — your splint is custom-made from that scan by one of our local labs.

A fitting appointment to check comfort and fit, with small adjustments made on the spot if needed. You’ll also be given wear and care instructions.

Review appointment – sometimes booked if required.

There’s no downtime and nothing uncomfortable about the process itself. Most of the “getting used to it” happens in the first week or two of actually wearing it at night.

What it does — and doesn’t — do

A splint protects your teeth from the physical damage of grinding. It doesn’t stop the grinding habit itself, and it won’t do much for jaw muscle tension if that’s your main issue rather than tooth wear. For patients whose problem is more about jaw pain and tension headaches, a splint is often paired with other TMD treatment options. You can also read about managing TMD symptoms day-to-day.

Caring for your splint

Rinse it after use, brush it gently with a soft brush (regular toothpaste can be abrasive on the material), and keep it in its case when it’s not in your mouth. Bring it along to your regular check-ups so we can confirm it’s still fitting well — bites shift slightly over time, and a splint that no longer fits properly isn’t doing its job.

How long does one last?

With reasonable care, a hard custom splint typically lasts a few years before it needs replacing, though heavier grinders may wear through one faster. We’ll check it at your regular visits and let you know when it’s time for a new one.

What it costs

Cost varies depending on the type of splint and whether it’s part of a broader treatment plan. You will be given a full quote before proceeding with any treatment.

Is a night splint right for you?

If you’re waking up with a sore jaw, noticing new wear or chips, or we’ve flagged signs of grinding at a check-up, a custom splint is worth discussing. Book a consultation with our Brisbane CBD dentist to find out if it’s the right option for you.

The post Custom Night Splints for Teeth Grinding: What to Expect first appeared on Dentistry on George.

We get asked this question often: composite bonding or veneers — which one do I actually need?

It’s a fair question, because both can fix chips, close small gaps, and even out a smile. But they’re not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on your teeth, your timeline and your budget — not just which one looks nicer in a before-and-after photo.

As a cosmetic dentistry practice in Brisbane CBD, this is one of the most common conversations we have with patients considering a smile refresh. Here’s how we think it through.

What composite bonding actually involves

Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin, applied directly to your tooth and shaped by hand in the chair. There’s no lab work involved, which means:

It’s often done in a single visit.

Very little (sometimes none) of your natural tooth needs to be removed.

It’s reversible — if you change your mind later, it can be removed without permanently altering the tooth underneath.

The trade-off is durability. Composite bonding typically lasts 3–7 years before it needs a touch-up or replacement, and it can pick up staining over time — particularly if you’re a regular coffee, tea or red wine drinker.

Tooth whitening and composite bonding

What porcelain veneers actually involve

Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain, custom-made in a lab and bonded to the front of your tooth. They take more planning:

Usually 2–3 appointments over a couple of weeks.

A small amount of enamel is removed to make room for the porcelain — this step is irreversible, which is why a thorough assessment beforehand matters.

With good care, they typically last 10–15 years, sometimes longer.

Veneers are more resistant to staining and hold their finish better over time than composite bonding. That durability is exactly why they cost more.

Natural looking porcelain veneers

So which one is right for you?

Neither is automatically the “better” option — it genuinely depends on the situation:

Composite bonding tends to suit smaller fixes: a single chipped tooth, a bit of unevenness, closing a small gap, or a lower-cost way to trial a change before committing to something more permanent.

Veneers tend to suit more comprehensive changes — several teeth at once, a more dramatic shape or shade change, or when durability matters more than upfront cost.

We’ll also usually check whether whitening should come first. If you’re planning veneers or bonding on your front teeth, whitening beforehand means we can match the new work to your best shade — rather than matching to a baseline you’ll want to change later.

What we won’t do

We won’t recommend veneers when bonding would genuinely serve you better, and we won’t talk you into a treatment plan built around what looks impressive rather than what your teeth actually need. If there’s a more conservative option that gets you the result you’re after, we’ll tell you.

Ready to find out which one suits you?

The only way to know for sure is a cosmetic consultation, where we’ll look at your teeth, talk through what you’re hoping to change, and give you an honest recommendation — including realistic numbers on cost and how long each option should last.

Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. It’s a question we get a lot at our Brisbane CBD dental practice once a patient sees their x-ray or hears the word “crown” for the first time — do I actually need the whole tooth covered, or is there a smaller option? The honest answer is: it depends on how much healthy tooth is left, and where.

What’s the difference between a crown and an onlay?

A crown covers the entire visible part of your tooth, like a cap. It’s the right call when there isn’t enough strong, healthy tooth structure left to support anything smaller — often after a large filling has failed, a significant crack, or extensive decay.

An onlay covers less. It restores the chewing surface and one or more of the cusps (the pointy bits on top of your back teeth) while leaving more of your natural tooth in place. Think of it as sitting somewhere between a filling and a full crown — more coverage than a filling, less than a crown.

Neither option is “better” across the board. They solve different problems — which is exactly why, as a Brisbane CBD dentist offering both dental crowns and onlays, we assess each tooth individually rather than defaulting to the bigger treatment.

How we decide which one your tooth needs

A few things guide the decision, and we’ll always talk you through what we’re seeing before recommending either:

How much healthy tooth structure remains. The more of your own tooth we can keep and still get a strong result, the more likely an onlay is suitable.

Where the tooth sits and the bite forces on it. Back teeth carry more chewing load, which affects what will hold up long-term.

Whether there’s a crack extending below the gumline. This can change the whole plan, sometimes ruling out an onlay.

What’s happening cosmetically, particularly for teeth that show when you smile or talk.

We base this on your x-rays, a close clinical look, and sometimes photos taken during the appointment — not a one-size-fits-all rule.

What to expect either way

The process is similar for both. We prepare the tooth, take a scan or impression, and fit a temporary restoration while your crown or onlay is made. Most people find the appointment straightforward, and we’ll always explain what to expect for your tooth specifically before we start.

Both crowns and onlays are designed to last many years with good care and regular check-ups — how long depends on your bite, your oral hygiene, and the tooth itself, so we won’t put a number on it without seeing your case. If you’d like more detail on the process and what’s involved, our Complete Guide to Dental Crowns covers costs, benefits and what to expect in more depth.

A few common questions

Is an onlay cheaper than a crown? It depends — onlays typically use less material and less chair time, though the exact cost depends on your tooth and situation. We’ll give you a clear, written quote before any treatment begins.

Can I choose whether I have a crown or an onlay? Not always. It comes down to how much healthy tooth is left, so it’s a clinical decision rather than a preference — but we’ll always explain why we’re recommending one over the other.

Do onlays need replacing sooner than crowns? Not necessarily. With good care, both can last many years. An onlay is a more conservative treatment, not a shorter-lived one.

Worried about a filling that’s failed, or a crack you’ve noticed?

If your dentist has mentioned you might need a crown — or you’ve noticed a crack, sensitivity, or an old filling that’s seen better days — book a consultation with Dentistry on George, your Brisbane CBD dentist for dental crowns and bridges. We’ll walk you through your x-rays and talk about what’s actually best for your tooth, not just the default option.

You’re doing everything right. You’re taking your medication, attending your appointments, watching your diet. And yet your blood pressure won’t budge. Or you’re exhausted despite a full night’s sleep. Or your mood has shifted in ways that don’t quite add up. Or perhaps you’re not reaching your fitness goals or your work performance is just not what it used to be.

For a significant number of Australians, the missing piece is obstructive sleep apnoea — and they have no idea.

OSA is far more common than most people realise

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing the body to partially wake in order to restore breathing. These episodes can happen dozens — sometimes hundreds — of times per night, fragmenting sleep and starving the body of oxygen, without the person having any memory of it in the morning.

The prevalence data is striking. Research suggests that approximately one in two men over 40 have moderate-to-severe sleep-disordered breathing. Yet OSA remains significantly underdiagnosed, partly because many people assume it only affects overweight, older men who snore loudly. In reality, OSA presents across a much wider range of body types, ages, and genders — and many people with significant OSA sleep through the night without their partner noticing anything unusual.

The conditions OSA may be driving — or making worse

High blood pressure that won’t respond to treatment

If you or someone you know has hypertension that isn’t responding well to medication, OSA is worth investigating. Each time the airway collapses during sleep, the body undergoes a stress response — heart rate rises, blood pressure spikes, and the sympathetic nervous system activates. Over thousands of episodes per year, this chronic nocturnal stress drives sustained hypertension that can be difficult to manage through medication alone.

Research has shown that successfully treating OSA can lead to meaningful improvements in blood pressure management — sometimes reducing the need for medication.

Heart failure and atrial fibrillation

The links between OSA and cardiovascular disease are now well established. Recent data highlights a significant gap in chronic disease management: up to 80% of patients with heart failure, and approximately 50% of those with atrial fibrillation, have undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea.

For patients already managing these conditions, the repeated oxygen desaturations that occur during untreated OSA place additional strain on an already compromised cardiovascular system. Identifying and treating OSA is increasingly considered part of comprehensive cardiac care — yet it is often missed entirely.

Type 2 diabetes and metabolic health

OSA is also considered a likely hidden variable in patients with type 2 diabetes that is difficult to manage. Night-time oxygen desaturation and disrupted sleep architecture affect insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation. For patients who are doing everything their endocrinologist recommends and still struggling to achieve good control, sleep-disordered breathing is worth ruling out.

Mood, cognition, and what gets mistaken for something else

This is perhaps the most underappreciated aspect of OSA — and one that disproportionately affects women.

Symptoms including persistent low mood, poor concentration, memory difficulties, irritability, and emotional flatness are frequently attributed to depression, stress, perimenopause, or simply the demands of a busy life. In a meaningful proportion of cases, these symptoms are driven — at least in part — by disrupted, non-restorative sleep caused by untreated OSA.

One of the key clinical distinctions is the difference between general tiredness and excessive daytime sleepiness. General tiredness — feeling fatigued and flat — is common and has many causes. Excessive daytime sleepiness — the inability to stay awake in passive situations, such as reading, watching television, or sitting in a meeting — is a more specific symptom of disordered sleep architecture and is worth taking seriously.

Brain fog, reduced vigilance, and difficulty sustaining attention also have real-world consequences. For professionals, this affects performance, decision-making, and productivity. For anyone who drives regularly, it is a genuine safety concern.

Why so many people go undiagnosed

OSA is underdiagnosed for several reasons. Many people don’t snore loudly, or sleep alone and have no partner to report disrupted breathing. Some people feel they sleep “fine” — they fall asleep easily and don’t wake frequently — without realising that their sleep is non-restorative at a physiological level.

Women in particular are less likely to be referred for sleep studies, partly because their symptoms more commonly present as fatigue, mood changes, and insomnia rather than the loud snoring and witnessed apnoeas more typically associated with male OSA.

And for people already seeing multiple specialists for chronic conditions, sleep-disordered breathing may simply not be on anyone’s radar.

What can be done — and where your dentist fits in

If you think OSA may be relevant to you or someone in your care, the starting point is usually a conversation with your GP and a referral for a sleep study. We can help arrange this for you. This may be an in-laboratory polysomnography or a home-based sleep test, depending on your circumstances and your physician’s recommendation.

If OSA is confirmed, treatment options include:

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) — a machine that delivers pressurised air through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep. It is highly effective but not tolerated by all patients. Mask comfort, noise, and the practical demands of travelling with equipment mean that adherence can be a real challenge.

Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS) — a custom-fitted oral appliance made by a dentist that works by gently repositioning the lower jaw forward during sleep, preventing the airway from collapsing. MAS therapy is recommended by sleep physicians as a first-line treatment for mild-to-moderate OSA, and as an alternative for patients with severe OSA who cannot tolerate CPAP.

At Dentistry on George, we provide custom-fitted MAS devices for patients who have been diagnosed with OSA or who are experiencing significant snoring. The device is made from digital scans of your teeth and fitted precisely to your bite. Most patients find it significantly more comfortable and convenient than CPAP, and many report noticeable improvements in daytime energy and alertness within the first few weeks.

Who should consider asking about OSA?

You may benefit from a conversation about sleep-disordered breathing if you:

Snore regularly, or have been told you stop breathing in your sleep

Wake unrefreshed despite what seems like adequate sleep

Experience excessive daytime sleepiness — not just tiredness, but difficulty staying awake in passive situations

Have high blood pressure that is difficult to control

Experience persistent brain fog, poor concentration, or mood changes that haven’t responded to other interventions

Are a woman whose symptoms have been attributed to perimenopause or stress

What to do next

If you think OSA may be relevant to you, the starting point is a conversation with your GP and a referral for a sleep study. We’d encourage you to take this route rather than going directly to a sleep study provider — and here’s why.

Not all sleep study providers are equal, and the pathway you take matters. Some providers are affiliated with CPAP suppliers and will recommend CPAP as the primary or only treatment option, regardless of whether other options might suit you better. For a dentist to provide a mandibular advancement splint (MAS) as part of your OSA management, MAS therapy needs to be specifically recommended or considered in your sleep physician’s report.

By starting with your GP, they can refer you to an independent sleep physician who will assess all appropriate treatment options for your situation — including MAS — and provide a report that opens the door to the full range of care available to you. We’re happy to suggest sleep physicians we work with regularly if that’s helpful.

If you’ve already had a sleep study but aren’t sure what your report says about MAS therapy, bring it along to your appointment with us and we can take a look together.

At Dentistry on George, we see patients in Brisbane CBD who are looking for practical, evidence-based solutions to sleep-disordered breathing — whether that’s snoring affecting a partner’s sleep, or OSA contributing to a broader health picture that hasn’t quite added up.

This guide explains what affects the cost of dental implants, what’s typically involved, and how to think about the investment long-term.

Intro

If you have missing teeth, a failing tooth, or you are weighing up options to replace a teeth, one of the first questions you probably have is: am I a candidate for dental implants?

The short answer is that many people are suitable for dental implants, but not every case is the same. Implant treatment needs proper assessment and planning. It is not something that should be decided with a quick glance or a generic answer.

At Dentistry on George, when we assess patients for dental implants in Brisbane CBD, we look at the full picture before recommending whether an implant is likely to be a suitable option.

Many patients who are unsure at this stage find it helpful to first understand their options more broadly before deciding whether implants are right for them.

👉 Thinking about dental implants? Read more at our main page about implants at our CBD Dental Clinic.

What makes someone a good candidate for dental implants?

A dental implant can be a very good option for replacing a missing tooth or teeth, but suitability depends on several factors, including:

the condition of the tooth or gap

how easy the area will be to clean and maintain long term

Some patients are excellent candidates from the start. Others may still be suitable, but may need extra treatment or planning first.

It is not just about whether a tooth is missing

A lot of people assume that if they have a missing tooth, they can automatically have an implant placed. Sometimes that is true. Sometimes it is not.

For example, if a tooth has been missing for a long time, the bone in that area may have changed over time. If there is gum disease, that may need to be stabilised first. If the bite places too much force on the area, that also needs to be considered.

This is why a proper implant consultation matters. A treatment plan should be based on your specific mouth, not on a one-size-fits-all approach.

How much bone do you need for a dental implant?

Bone support is one of the main things we assess for dental implants in Brisbane CBD.

A dental implant needs enough bone around it to be placed securely and to heal well. In some cases, there is already enough bone. In other cases, there may be bone loss due to infection, gum disease, trauma, or because the tooth has been missing for a long time.

Not having ideal bone straight away does not always mean you cannot have a dental implant. Some patients may still be suitable with additional planning or treatment, such as bone grafting or timing the implant placement carefully after an extraction.

Yes. Gum health is important.

Dental implants need a healthy environment around them. If there is active gum disease, poor plaque control, or inflammation that has not been managed, that can affect the long-term success of treatment.

This does not mean implants are off the table. It usually means we need to get the mouth healthy and stable first.

In many cases, the best implant treatment starts with addressing the foundations properly.

Does general health matter?

Yes, your general health and medical history can be relevant when deciding whether dental implants are appropriate.

Certain health conditions, medications, healing issues, or lifestyle factors may affect treatment planning, healing, or the timing of the procedure. Smoking is also an important factor, as it can affect healing and long-term outcomes.

That does not automatically rule treatment out, but it does mean it needs to be considered carefully.

If you’ve been thinking about IV sedation dentistry in Brisbane CBD but keep hesitating because it sounds like it might be complicated, you’re not alone. This blog has been written as reassurance that it’s manageable, safe, and not a big logistical ordeal. This is what the experience typically looks like at Dentistry on George.

If you’re considering sedation dentistry in Brisbane CBD, you can learn more about your options here.

First, a quick clarification: IV sedation isn’t the same as being fully asleep

Dental IV sedation is sometimes referred to as ‘sleep dentistry’. However, it is a misconception that you will be asleep. IV sedation is also known as twilight sedation as you feel sleepy and relaxed, but you are not fully asleep or unconscious. IV sedation usually creates a deeply relaxed, drowsy state where time passes quickly and you often forget what has happened. Most patients find the whole process feels far less intense than they expected.

Step 1: The consultation

Before we book IV sedation, we do a consultation right here at our Brisbane CBD dental clinic. This occurs after you have seen the dentist for your dental examination and treatment plan. The dental sedationist needs to know the treatment being proposed, how many appointments are required and how long each appointment is expected to take. At the end of the sedation consultation you will feel clear on three things:

Is IV sedation suitable for you?

What’s the plan for your dental treatment?

What do you need to do before and after?

This is also where you can tell us what you’re worried about — gag reflex, panic, past experiences, fear of needles, fear of judgement, or just the thought of being in the chair. The plan is built around that.

If IV sedation isn’t the right option for you, we’ll be upfront and talk through alternatives. Sometimes we are not sure if this is the right plan for you until we speak to your GP or any specialists you see. Sometimes we need further information and/or tests, and a second consultation will be arranged once we have all the facts.

To ensure we are treating you in the safest way possible, we are stringent with our selection criteria and who is suitable for dental treatment under IV sedation. There may be other sedation options available for you. Read more about the different sedation options at our types of dental sedation blog.

Step 2: Before the dental sedation appointment

You’ll be given clear instructions on what to do before the appointment. The most important instructions are:

You must have an escort who will bring you to your appointment, stay nearby while you are having your treatment, and then take you home by car after your appointment.

You’ll receive fasting instructions and medication instructions if anything needs to be adjusted.

Step 3: On the day — what it actually feels like

When you arrive, we do final checks and talk you through what’s happening. Then the IV line and the monitoring equipment is placed.

The sedation medication will then be started – many patients describe it as a “switch” from tense and alert to calm and detached from the procedure.

Once you’re comfortably sedated, we complete the planned dental work while you’re closely monitored. For a lot of patients, this is the first time they’ve felt like they can actually get dentistry done without white-knuckling through it.

Step 4: Recovery afterwards

After treatment, you’ll stay with us while you recover. Most people feel sleepy and a bit foggy. That’s expected.

When you’re ready, you go home with your escort and written instructions. The rest of the day is usually a “quiet day” — rest, take it easy, and follow the aftercare guidance that matches the treatment you had done.

The main reasons people choose IV sedation dentistry

In our practice, patients typically choose IV sedation dentistry because they:

feel anxious or panicky in the dental chair

have a strong gag reflex

want a calmer experience for longer appointments

don’t want to remember the procedure

have been putting treatment off and want a way to move forward

If any of that sounds familiar, IV sedation may be worth discussing.

“Is it going to be too hard to organise?”

Usually, no.

The two practical things most people need are:

an escort, and

a plan for the rest of the day afterwards.

Everything else is guided by us, and we’ll keep the process clear and calm.

IV sedation dentistry in Brisbane CBD

If you’re considering dental sedation in Brisbane, the next step is a consultation where we assess your suitability, talk through your concerns, and plan treatment in a way that feels manageable.

Not sure if IV sedation is the right option? You can learn more about sedation dentistry in Brisbane CBD here.

You can book online or call (07) 3211 1155 to find out more.

IV sedation is not suitable for everyone. A consultation is required to assess suitability. Individual experiences vary.

The post IV Sedation Dentistry in Brisbane CBD – What Actually Happens During Your Appointment first appeared on Dentistry on George.

Veneers can be a great option for improving the shape, colour, and symmetry of your teeth — but they’re not a “one-size-fits-all” shortcut, and they shouldn’t be rushed.

This guide explains the types of veneers, who they suit, what the process looks like, and what to consider before you commit — especially if you’re searching for veneers in Brisbane CBD.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin coverings bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. Depending on the material and the plan, veneers can be used to improve:

Worn or chipped edges

Tooth shape (short, uneven, or peg-shaped teeth)

Colour that doesn’t respond to whitening

Small gaps or mild alignment concerns

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment, and most types involve removing at least some natural enamel (meaning they’re often not reversible).

Porcelain vs composite veneers: what’s the difference?

There are two common veneer options:

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are made by a dental lab and then bonded to your teeth. They’re known for a very natural look and good stain resistance, and with proper care they commonly last around 10–15 years.

Best for: long-term smile improvements, high aesthetic demands, multiple teeth, significant shape/colour changes.

Natural looking porcelain veneers

Composite veneers (composite bonding)

Composite veneers are built directly on the tooth using tooth-coloured resin. They can be a great option for smaller changes, a tighter budget, or as a “trial run” in some cases.

Best for: smaller corrections, edge repairs, minor reshaping, and situations where you want a more conservative starting point.

Your Brisbane dentist should help you choose based on your goals, your bite, how you use your teeth, and what will hold up long-term — not just what looks good on day one.

Composite veneers

The part people don’t talk about: veneers are a commitment

If you’re considering veneers, these are the real-world considerations you deserve to know up front:

Enamel removal: many veneer types require removing some natural enamel.

Sensitivity can happen: some people notice sensitivity to hot/cold afterwards.

They can come off or chip: veneers can become dislodged or damaged (especially with biting habits).

They still need maintenance: veneers don’t stop decay or gum disease — your natural teeth still need excellent hygiene and regular reviews.

They won’t last forever: you should also consider your ability to have them replaced in the future

A good veneer plan is conservative, bite-aware, and designed to look natural for your face — not a generic “Hollywood template”. This is why our Brisbane CBD cosmetic dentists will take the time to find out your goals and map out a plan that is unique for you.

Who is (and isn’t) a good candidate for veneers?

Veneers can be a great fit if you have healthy teeth and gums and you’re mainly wanting aesthetic improvements.

Veneers may not be the best first step if you:

grind/clench heavily (you may need a night guard or a different plan)

have active gum disease or untreated decay

want a colour change only (whitening might be a better starting point)

have significant crowding/bite issues (orthodontics may be more appropriate)

Often, the best results come from choosing the right treatment — not the fastest treatment.

What’s the veneers process like?

Every practice does this slightly differently, but a quality process usually includes:

Consultation + assessment (goals, photos, scans, bite check, gum health)

Smile plan (shape, shade, and how it will look on your face)

Tooth preparation (if needed) + temporary veneers (in many cases)

Final bonding appointment

Review + maintenance plan (including hygiene and protective options if you clench/grind)

If you work in the city, doing veneers in Brisbane CBD can be convenient because appointments are typically spaced out over a few visits.

How long do veneers last?

With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last 10–15 years (composite veneers 5-7 years) — sometimes longer — but it depends on your bite, habits, and maintenance.

Things that shorten veneer lifespan include:

biting nails, pens, ice, hard foods

using teeth as tools

uncontrolled grinding/clenching

poor gum health or inconsistent cleaning

How much do veneers cost in Brisbane?

Veneer pricing varies based on:

porcelain vs composite

number of teeth involved

complexity (shape changes, bite changes, wear patterns)

whether other dental work is needed first

lab quality and planning time

A proper consult should include a clear written plan and costs before anything starts.

Alternatives to veneers (sometimes the smarter move)

If you want a better smile but veneers feel like a big step, alternatives may include:

professional whitening (often the best first step for colour)

crowns (when the tooth needs strength/coverage rather than cosmetics)

FAQ: Veneers Brisbane

Do veneers ruin your teeth?
Veneers don’t “ruin” teeth, but many types require removing enamel and are not fully reversible. The tooth underneath can still decay, so hygiene and reviews matter.

Are veneers painful?
Most people find it very manageable. Some sensitivity can occur, especially to hot/cold.

Do veneers stain?
Porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel, but the edges and the natural tooth around them still need good care.

Can a veneer fall off?
Yes — it’s possible for veneers to become dislodged. If something doesn’t feel right, it should be checked promptly.

How many veneers do I need?
It depends on your smile line and your goals. Some people only need 2–4 teeth; others prefer a broader smile design. This is where good planning matters.

What’s the next step?

If you’re considering veneers in Brisbane and want a plan that looks natural and fits your bite, book a consultation at Dentistry on George (Brisbane CBD). We’ll talk through options (including alternatives), expected longevity, and a clear step-by-step plan — so you can decide confidently.

2. Build a simple 2026 home care routine

Most people don’t need complicated routines — they need consistency.

The basics:

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste

A strong home care routine reduces the risk of needing major dental work like crowns, bridges, or implants in the future.

3. Consider cosmetic goals for the new year

Many people use January as a clean slate — including for their smile. We take a conservative, long-term approach to cosmetic dentistry at Dentistry on George, always focusing on health first and aesthetics second.

We provide gentle, supportive care tailored to anxious patients.

As the end of the year approaches, many people start thinking about holidays, work deadlines, and last-minute plans. One thing that often gets overlooked is private health insurance — particularly dental benefits that expire on December 31st. Most health funds in Australia operate on a “use it or lose it” system, meaning any unused dental entitlements don’t roll over into the new year.

At Dentistry on George, we regularly see patients who are surprised to learn how much value they miss out on simply because they weren’t aware of how their cover works. So, as your trusted Brisbane CBD dentist, here’s an easy, practical guide to help you understand your dental benefits and make the most of what you’re already paying for.

How dental benefits typically work

Every health fund is different, but most follow a similar structure:

1. A yearly limit for general dental

This usually includes:

Check-ups

Scale and clean

X-rays

Fluoride treatments

Simple fillings

These limits generally refresh on January 1st ( a few health funds go by financial year not calendar year) — but unused amounts disappear.

2. Separate limits for major dental

Depending on your cover, this may include:

Crowns

Bridges

Root canal treatment

Dentures

Some funds also include a portion of dental implants

Understanding these limits allows you to plan treatment properly, especially if you’re completing care over multiple visits.

3. Waiting periods and annual resets

If you’ve upgraded your policy recently (for example, to increase your major dental cover), waiting periods may apply. Once the new year begins, your limits reset — but so do your waiting periods for anything newly added.

Why it’s worth knowing your health fund details

Most people pay their premiums without fully understanding what they’re entitled to. A quick check of your health fund app or a phone call can be surprisingly eye-opening. You may discover you still have rebates available for a dental check-up, preventive care, or recommended follow-up treatment.

Regular preventive care is the most effective way to avoid larger issues later. Check-ups, early detection, and routine cleans can reduce the need for complex care like dental crowns, root canal therapy, or extractions. As a Brisbane dentist focused on long-term oral health, we’ve seen first-hand how staying on top of maintenance keeps treatments simpler, more comfortable, and more affordable.

Why December is a smart time for a dental visit

December doesn’t have to be frantic — there are calm, practical reasons why it’s worth booking a dental visit before the year ends:

1. Prevent starting the new year with a tooth problem

You don’t want January holidays or back-to-work season disrupted by a preventable dental issue.

2. Make the most of benefits you’ve already paid for

Even a simple clean or check-up ensures you’re not leaving rebates unused.

3. Plan bigger treatments across two calendar years

If you need crowns, veneers, or wish to begin implant treatment, starting now can allow you to split stages across two years — which can maximise health fund claims (depending on your policy).

4. Ideal time for whitening before holiday photos

Many patients book teeth whitening in December to feel their best for end-of-year events.

We’re here to help you understand your options

We know health funds can be confusing. Our team can provide item numbers and treatment plans so you can speak to your fund and understand your exact entitlements. Whether you’re due for a clean, need follow-up treatment, or simply want clarity, we’re here to support you.

If you’re due for a dental check-up in Brisbane CBD, now is a great time to book before your benefits refresh.
Call us or book online to schedule your appointment at Dentistry on George.

The post Understanding Your Health Fund Benefits Before They Expire first appeared on Dentistry on George.
