Dental Crowns Brisbane CBD
At Dentistry on George, we restore damaged, weakened, and heavily filled teeth with custom-made dental crowns — crafted by local Queensland laboratories and fitted with care at our Brisbane CBD practice.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Once fitted, a crown covers the entire visible surface of the tooth above the gum line, protecting what remains underneath.
Crowns can be made from different materials — porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, or metal — and your dentist will recommend the most suitable option based on the location of the tooth, your bite, and your aesthetic goals.
When is a dental crown needed?
You may need a crown if you have:
- A tooth weakened by a large filling
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Severe decay that cannot be restored with a filling alone
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment
- A dental implant that requires a crown on top
- A tooth that is discoloured or misshapen and you would like to improve its appearance
Crowns are one of the most versatile restorations in dentistry. In many cases, placing a crown at the right time prevents a tooth from fracturing completely — which would require extraction and replacement instead.
What materials do we use?
All crowns at Dentistry on George are made by local Queensland dental laboratories using quality materials. We do not use overseas laboratories.
Porcelain and ceramic crowns — natural-looking and ideal for front teeth where appearance is the priority.
Zirconia crowns — extremely strong, natural-looking, and suitable for both front and back teeth. Our most commonly recommended option.
Metal crowns — highly durable and typically used for back teeth where strength is the priority and the crown is less visible.
Your dentist will discuss the options with you and recommend what suits your situation before any treatment begins.
The crown procedure — what to expect
Getting a crown at Dentistry on George involves two appointments:
Appointment 1 — Tooth preparation Your dentist reshapes the tooth and takes digital scans. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made by our local Queensland laboratory. This appointment takes approximately 60–90 minutes.
Appointment 2 — Crown fitting Once your custom crown is ready — usually within two weeks — it is tried in, adjusted if needed, and cemented in place. This appointment is typically 30–45 minutes.
Most patients find crown treatment very comfortable. Local anaesthetic is used throughout, and IV sedation is available for patients who experience dental anxiety or would prefer to be unaware of the procedure.
Dental crown costs in Brisbane CBD
The cost of a dental crown depends on the material chosen and the complexity of the treatment.
As a guide, dental crowns at our Brisbane CBD practice range from approximately $1,800 for an onlay (part crown) to $2,650 for an implant crown.
Your dentist will provide a clear written treatment plan and cost estimate before any work begins — no surprises.
Some private health funds provide partial rebates for crowns depending on your level of cover. We process health fund claims on the spot via HICAPS. It is worth checking your policy before your appointment.
Dental crowns and sedation
If you have been avoiding dental treatment because of anxiety, a crown procedure does not need to be an ordeal. We offer IV sedation at our Brisbane CBD practice, meaning you can have your crown completed comfortably with little or no memory of the appointment.
Dr Kathryn Al-Dhafeeri holds a dental sedation endorsement — one of only a small number of dentists in Queensland with this qualification — and sedation is available for crown procedures when clinically appropriate.

Bridges and missing teeth
If you have a missing tooth rather than a damaged one, a dental bridge may be an option worth discussing. A bridge uses crowns on the teeth either side of the gap to support a false tooth in the middle.
We also offer dental implants — a long-term solution for missing teeth that does not rely on the adjacent teeth for support. Your dentist can walk you through both options and help you decide which is most suitable for your situation.
I’ve been seeing Mishari at Dentistry on George for a few years now and highly recommend the practice. The clinic is conveniently located in the city, always spotless, and the staff are consistently friendly and welcoming. Mishari is incredibly meticulous and always takes the time to explain the different treatment options before proceeding, which I really appreciate. As someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy going to the dentist, the whole team does their best to make the experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible. A great practice all around.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dental crowns last?
Most crowns last 10–15 years or longer with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. The lifespan depends on the material, the location of the tooth, and how well the crown is maintained.
Do dental crowns hurt?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and most patients report minimal discomfort. If you are anxious about treatment, IV sedation is available — ask us when you book.
Are dental crowns covered by health insurance?
Many private health funds provide partial rebates for crowns under major dental cover. The amount varies depending on your fund and level of cover. We recommend checking with your fund before your appointment. We process claims on the spot via HICAPS.
How do I care for my crown?
Treat it like a natural tooth — brush twice daily, floss daily, and attend regular check-ups. Avoid using your crowned tooth to bite hard objects such as ice or hard lollies, as this can chip or crack the crown.
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A crown covers the entire tooth, while a veneer only covers the front surface. Crowns are used for structural restoration — when a tooth is damaged, weakened, or heavily filled. Veneers are primarily cosmetic and are used on teeth that are healthy but you want to improve the appearance of.
Can a crown be placed on a dental implant?
Yes — implant crowns are one of the most common uses of crowns. The crown attaches to the implant rather than a natural tooth, replacing a missing tooth entirely. Find out more on our dental implants page.
What if I need a crown but I am nervous about the dentist?
We understand dental anxiety is very real and very common. IV sedation is available at our practice for patients who would prefer to be unaware of the procedure. Read more on our dental sedation page.
