Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a procedure designed to save your tooth from severe pain, infection or disease. Keeping your natural tooth structure in place is always better, so it’s best to get your root canal treatment done sooner rather than later. If you suspect you might need a root canal in Brisbane, give us a call. We’ll assess the situation and book you in as soon as possible.

Why you might need root canal treatment

Inside each tooth are canals of nerve tissue and blood vessels called the dental pulp. These are sealed inside the tooth, but if they are breached, for example by decay going through the tooth into the pulp, the nerves begin to die. Other potential reasons include cracks or the tooth suffering trauma from a sports injury or an accident.

This can be painful (causing toothache) or painless (quite often in the case of trauma). If the nerves are beyond repair and/or they die completely, these now empty canals are a breeding ground for bacteria. This can lead to pain and infection (dental abscess). Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is the cleaning out and filling of these dental canals. This can take more than one appointment, especially if the canals are heavily infected.

Root canals can fail for a few reasons. They can get infected again in the future, which is why it is important to complete the procedure and get a good seal over the canals. It is also strongly advised to have a crown on your tooth, especially on back (molar) teeth. This is because one of the main reasons root canals fail is the crown above the gum splitting.

The benefits of root canal treatment

There really is nothing like having your own tooth. The benefits of root canal treatment are:

  • Keeping the tooth
  • Preserving the bone and gum
  • Maintaining normal function and comfort
  • Can be cheaper in the long run compared to other options
  • Studies suggest success rates of around 90%
  • For the vast majority of cases, root canal treatment is painless

Sometimes people put off root canal treatment out of fear that it will be painful. With modern tools and local anaesthesia, root canal treatment is pain-free in most cases. If you’re very nervous about the treatment, let us know and speak to your GP beforehand for additional subscriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The specific price will depend on each case, and whether we need to refer you to an endodontic (root canal) specialist. We take pride in our quality care, making sure the treatment is done correctly the first time. This helps you save money in the long run. We give full upfront quotes on all treatments.

Each tooth’s canals differ in size, shape, and complexity. If the canals are complex or heavily infected, it’s common that you might need two visits. This allows us to make sure the infection is fully cleared out before filling in the canals.

After the root canal, you might need a crown to protect the tooth. At your first visit, we’ll make a mould of your tooth and send it to a local laboratory to make the crown. You’ll get a temporary crown until your second appointment where the permanent one is put in.

We recommend a minimum of 2 weeks. We’ll go over your treatment timeline with you, booking your appointments as close together as possible.

Every tooth is different – some have straightforward root canals that are easy to clean and fill; others may be curved or very fine. Some teeth have extra canals which are hard to find. This all affects the cost of the procedure, and in some complex cases, we may need to refer you to our endodontic (root canal) specialist colleagues. They have microscopes to visualise these tiny canals, as well as many years of expertise in the field.

Most patients find the treatment completely pain-free. We use local anaesthesia during the treatment, making the area completely numb. However, when you need a root canal treatment, the nerves around your tooth are already irritated and inflamed. In some rare cases, people experience pain during the treatment, but it’s more due to the condition itself than the care.

Please tell us beforehand if you have any concerns or you’re worried about discomfort during your visit. We’ll do our best to make your visit as pleasant as possible. You can also speak to your GP for additional prescriptions to help you feel at ease.
